Products, Experiences, and the 5 Senses

The best ‘product’ ever ‘made’ is sex. Yes, sex.

This is not just some clickbait, although it does feel intended. I remember watching a TedX once ( Can’t seem to remember its title at all ), and that the best products and experience stimulates all 5 senses. I got reminded of this specifically when Dr. Alex was talking about being sensitive to our surroundings during during the inner engineering lecture we had today over zoom.

As an industrial designer, I was trained to be responsive to minute changes in my environment. But this is more so for products and the experiences that I go through. In this line, we are problem solvers, but we need to add flavour and desire through tinkering with the senses. It made me wonder :

“ Products are to people what MSG is to instant noodles. It gives flavour and makes life taste a little less boring. But it doesn’t have any nutritional or sustenance value. The real ‘food’ comes from the noodles — and the noodles are the people swimming in the MSG soup”

Okay, maybe I didn’t analogise it properly, but i’ve never really thought about it until today. But maybe it’s not the products that need solving, but people’s behaviours. Today, I have made it a point to be sensitive to people’s body language, and the reasons they do a certain action. And to craft products or experiences based off their gestures.

This is something that I had learnt during my previous career as a personal fitness trainer. We preach about the mind-muscle connection, and sensitivity to my senses, actions and thoughts are pretty similar. Know yourself, know your weakness. And that is the problem.

I’m really looking forward to knowing myself more, and that criticism, no matter how small, should be taken in without my emotions barging ahead. Its just a month into the venture builder programme, and although, i dare say, i have a tinge bit more experience than the rest, i’m pretty stoked and excited to ‘see’ the world through my 5 senses.

I am excited to see what i’m able to come up with and how this betters my entrepreneurship moving forward.

Cheers.
